NOTEWORTHY OCCURRENCES IN THE SACRED LIFE OF SAINT NEKTARIOS, METROPOLITAN OF PENTAPOLIS Part II

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ Our Only True Lord, God, and Savior,

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! HE WAS, IS, AND EVER SHALL BE.

NOTEWORTHY OCCURRENCES IN THE SACRED LIFE
OF SAINT NEKTARIOS, METROPOLITAN OF PENTAPOLIS
[Part II]

Oikos.

A man, with his mind in heaven, were you, in the world
still living, O Nektarios, Hierarch of Christ. You led a devout
and holy life, and in everything you were truly impeccable,
righteous and inspired by God. And henceforth you hear
us saying:

Rejoice, through whom the faithful are exalted; rejoice,
through whom the foes are astounded.
Rejoice, for of the Holy Fathers you were emulous;
rejoice, for you are the teacher of the Orthodox.
Rejoice, most holy house of the energy of God; rejoice,
God-written book of the new way of life.
Rejoice, modern-day peer of the Saints and Fathers;
rejoice, for you wisely kept your distance from matter.
Rejoice, the radiant trophy of the Faith; rejoice, the
dignified instrument of grace.
Rejoice, through whom is the Church celebrating;
rejoice through whom the isle of Aegina is rejoicing.
REJOICE, FATHER NEKTARIOS.

On November 9, we commemorate our Father among the
Saints Nektarios, Metropolitan of Pentapolis in Egypt, the
Wonder-worker and founder of the holy Monastery of Holy
Trinity on Aegina, who reposed in holiness in the year
1920.

You drank the nectar
of life eternal,
and poor out a river of
cures, O Nektarios.

On the ninth, the soul
of Nektarios left his
body.

When Saint Nektarios reached the age of 14, it was agreed that he would be taken on as an employee by a relative who had a shop in Constantinople. Since Anastasios’ family was poor, he needed to have work in order to continue his education, so he accepted the position. Before his departure, his grandmother had given him a Cross to wear about his neck containing THE HOLY RELICS OF THE PRECIOUS AND LIFE-GIVING CROSS OF JESUS. The Saint left for the ship, but did not have the fare to pay for the ticket. The captain observed the lad, and asked, "Where art thou bound, brave boy?" Anastasios replied, "To Constantinople, sir." The captain remarked, teasing, "Well, freeloaders are not welcome in the capital!" Anastasios answered nothing, but only shrank back in shame, since he was penniless. The captain then gave the orders to put out to sea. The ship’s engines, however, would not start; instead, they were emitting a strange sound. The crew was trying to ascertain the problem, while the captain was ready to break the wheel from his exasperation. Then, his eye caught the weeping Anastasios on the dock. The lad cried out, "Take me, captain, sir." The captain then motioned to him to get on board. The moment Anastasios’ feet touched the deck, the engines started and the ship began to move. Later, before his arrival, when it came time for the passengers to show their tickets, Anastasios panicked. One of the passengers took pity on him and paid for his fare. The generous and wealthy young man who took pity on the young Anastasios ws the nephew of the great Horemis, a millionaire from the island of Chios.

CONSTANTINOPLE

The man he was to see for his employment had left for Edessa, leaving Anastasios unemployed and homeless. He finally secured backbreaking work with a tobacco processing plant, where he would prepare the tobacco bales and stack them into boxes and cases. He then conveyed them to a pushcart and made deliveries throughout the city. His pay consisted mostly of his room and board. He worked late hours, and it was not unusual for his employer to raise his hand and strike the boy. Though he was far from home, Anastasios’ avid zeal for learning and a heart filled with godly fear remained ever with him. He was never careless about his studies and learning Greek letters, but applied himself diligently to whatever he put his hand or mind to doing. Even though he was without parental supervision, he shunned everything detrimental or mischievous, and anything that might seduce or gravitate him toward sinning.

In the midst of the capital’s clamor and crowd, and at such a young age, he nonetheless neglected not his prayers and meditation upon the writings of the Church Fathers. It was also the young Anastasios’ great passion to attend Church services regularly and carefully follow them. As a result, divine love increased and took wing in his heart, so that he wished to dedicate himself perfectly to pleasing the Lord. A burning desire was growing in him to embrace the Monastic life, which he deemed the speedier path to perfection and union with God Who is the highest desire for those seeking perfection.

In the meantime, the young Anastasios’ garments and shoes were becoming worn and falling apart. When he asked his employer for assistance, he was told to write to his parents. "But they are very poor, sir." Anastasios said. The employer had no time to listen to the youth’s dilemma and dismissed him in an offhand manner. Anastasios returned to his corner to sleep. He then thought he beheld the Lord Jesus Who was asking him why he was weeping. Anastasios attempted to speak to our Savior but was unable. When he arose, he decided to write to Jesus Christ. He took up his pencil and wrote:”

"My dearest Jesus: The reason that I am weeping continually is that my clothes and shoes are inadequate for winter. My employer turned me away. I cannot ask my poor family, to whom I have not been able to send even one coin. How shall I manage the deliveries in the bitter cold? I have mended my clothes many times, but they keep tearing. Forgive me for burdening Thee with this problem, but it is Thee Whom I worship and in Whom I have my hope. Thy faithful slave, Anastasios."

He addressed an envelope, writing: "To our Lord Jesus Christ in the Heavens." He then left early to post it. On the way, he was seen by the shop owner, Themistocles, whose store was opposite the tobacco establishment. "Where are you going so early, my Anastasios?" Themistocles asked, "To the post office, sir," Anastasios told him. "No need, said the man; "I shall post it for you." I see you are shivering in this cold, so return to the shop." Anastasios thanked him. In the meantime, the shop owner went on his way. He happened to look at Anastasios’ envelope, and the name of the Addressee caught his immediate attention. Startled, he said, "O my! How can this be posted?" In what desperate straits does that good lad find himself?" He then took upon himself to pause and open the envelope. He was so touched at the lad’s words that he went and prepared a parcel with warm clothing, shoes, underwear, and some spending money. He then posted it, addressing it to Anastasios Kephalas at the tobacco shop. A note was placed inside, upon which was written the following message: "Christ to Anastasios," the parcel was delivered, to the boundless joy and gratitude of the child. His employer, however, suspected him of theft. He began beating him and calling him a thief. Anastasios kept trying to explain, buthis boss kept striking him. The shopkeeper, who had received Anastasios’ letter, happened to be passing by. He heard the commotion and came rushing to the boy’s aid. The employer then desisted, fearing to create a fuss, which would certainly attract the attention of the Turkish authorities. Soon afterward, Anastasios was offered work at another shop, that of Themistocles, which he accepted. He stayed at his new establishment for a considerable time, finding decent conditions and time to study.

At length, when Anastasios Kephalas reached 24 years of age, he received a letter of recommendation from the Director of the school. He also accepted an appointment, from Metropolitan Gregory, as a teacher in the village of Lythion on the island of Chios. His family had already moved to the island, so he prepared for his trip and new post.
During the voyage, his ship encountered a storm at sea. the Monk Abimelech, one of the Saint’s biographers, describes the plight of the ship. The vessel was ready to sink when the captain shouted for the life-saving equipment to be readied. The young Anastasios wept and prayed to God. Looking heavenward, he implored God NOT to take his life, for he wished to preach on His behalf. He remembered that his grandmother told him that if the sea were ever rough, to dip the Precious relic of the Cross into the sea waves. He then removed his Cross and tied it to his belt. He then lowered it off the side of the ship and into the waves. After he hadn uttered three times those words which our Lord pronounced in the Gospel "Be still! Be silent!" [Mark 4:39], the wind abated, and there was a great calm. All on board were joyous and relieved. Only the young Anastasios was grieving for the loss of his grandmother’s gift Cross, which had fallen into the deep. However, a rapping sound below the ship’s waterline was heard and the captain and crew were concerned. The captain gave the command to take a small craft and examine the ship’s hull. The crew then discovered Anastasios’ Cross adhering to the ship’s frame where the knocking occurred. One of the sailors laid hold of the Cross and reported the finding to the captain, who began, shouting and waving at the departing Anastasios, "Kephalas, Kephalas! Come back!" With his heart overflowing with jubilation and gratitude, Anastasios received his Cross. This was the same Cross which he wore with his Monastic garb, even when he was made bishop.

At Chios, he remained in that teaching position for seven years. He not only was teaching his pupils, but also influenced and persuaded the villagers to pursue piety and virtue, which he was able to show them by his own example. He emphasized the importance of schooling and studying the Holy Scripture, and he urged the people not to be captivated by the beliefs of the heterodox. Anastasios was very much inspired by Saint Kosmas Aitolos (of Atolia), to whom he would often pray. He was an ardent zealot and supporter of Monastic life, he often visited the holy Monastery of the Holy Fathers. Eventually, Anastasios entered the Monastery of Nea Moni. On the 7th of November, 1876, he was TONSURED A MONK.

The lamp had been placed on the lampstand, even as it is written in the Gospel, that it might give light to all those in the house [Matthew 5:15]. Thus did the light of Metropolitan Nektarios abundantly shine before men, not only in Cairo, but also throughout Egypt. The pious Orthodox Christians esteemed him for his superior virtues. The Saint’s popularity and genuine admiration among the people, however, roused the envy of certain persons in the Alexandrian Patriarchate. Many of his peers, not wishing to acknowledge his genuine virtue, slandered him to the Patriarch, saying that his popularity among the people was reaching such a pitch that Sophronios could easily be dethroned. Although the holy Nektarios discharged his duties in a godly manner and sincerely showed his benefactor, the Metropolitan’s enemies swayed the Patriarch into thinking that his throne was in danger. Metropolitan Nektarios, thus, on the 11th of July 1890 was removed from the Church of Egypt and told to go elsewhere.

The holy man accepted this injustice and bitter trial with much thanksgiving toward the Lord, because he was accounted worthy to suffer calumny, unjust persecutions and dismissal, without being responsible for the tiniest provocation. The majority of his persecutors, who drove him out, were the hierarchs of the Church–many of whom aspired to power and glory. [Resources: The Great Synaxaristes of the Orthodox Church]

A Saint among the Saints is the renowned Wonder-worker and illustrious hierarch, Saint Nektarios, Metropolitan of Pentapolis in Egypt. He is the special boast of godly Orthodox Christians, the sweetest nectar of the life of virtue, which gives joy and gladness, through its sanctifying grace, to reverent hearts, rendering them precious vessels of the Holy Spirit. Saint Nektarios is such a repository of grace, for the attained the heights of humility and the deep abysses of love. As he is a giant in virtue and one preeminent in working miracles, we ardnely beg his protection and intercession before God.

The God-bearing hierarch, Saint Nektarios, was born in Selyvria of Thrace, Greece. He was born to the pious Demos and Maria Kephalas, on the 1st of October, 1846, being the fifth of six children. In holy Baptism he was named Anastasios. His father worked hard to provide for his family, laboring at times as a farmer and other times at sea. At that time Orthodoxy was enslaved by the Ottoman Turks. The Saint’s mother and grandmother exercised caution around the Turks, but always maintained hope for a better future. From his earliest youth, when his nails were still soft, he was manifesting how he would develop. He was prudent and wise, and proved an obedient son to his parents, who nurtured him in the instruction and admonition of the Lord [Ephesians 6:4], together with all things reverent according to Christ. From childhood, he avoided hurtful and evil pastimes, games, and associations. His soul, like a sponge, soaked up the streams of his parents’ good guidance and instructions. He especially hearkened to the words of his extremely pious mother and grandmother, and to whatever was good and profitable for the soul. Characteristic of his yearning and eager disposition was his learning to recite the 50th Psalm of David, "Have mercy on me, O God…" When he came to the verse which read, "I shall teach transgressors Thy ways, and the ungodly shall turn back unto Thee" [v. 13], he would pronounce those words twice and even thrice. He aspired early on to acquire theological knowledge that he might one day have as his mission the preaching of the Gospel, so that through teaching the law and will of the Lord, as many people as possible might be delivered from the path of lawlessness leading to perdition and be placed on the path of piety, virtue, and salvation.

After putting himself through school in Constantinople with much hard labor, he became a monk on the island of Chios in 1876, receiving the monastic name of Lazaros; because of his virtue, a year later he was ordained Deacon, receiving the new name of Nektarios. Under the patronage of Patriarch Sophronios of Alexandria, Nektarios went to Athens to study in 1882; completing his theological studies in 1885 he went to Alexandria, where Patriarch Sophronios ordained him priest on March 23, 1886 in the Cathedral of Saint Savvas, and in August of the same year, in the Church of Saint Nicholas in Cairo, made him Archimandrite. Archimandrite Nektarios showed much zeal both for preaching the word of God, and for the beauty of God’s house. He greatly beautified the Church of Saint Nicholas in Cairo, and years later, when Nektarios was in Athens, Saint Nicholas appeared to him in a dream, embracing him and telling him he was going to exalt him very high.

On January 15, 1889, in the same Church of Saint Nicholas, Nektarios was consecrated Metropolitan of the Pentapolis in eastern Libya, which was under the jurisdiction of Alexandria. Although Nektarios’ swift ascent through the degrees of Ecclesiastical Office did not affect his modesty and childlike innocence, it aroused the envy of lesser men who convinced the elderly Sophronios that Nektarios had it in his heart to become Patriarch. Since the people loved Nektarios, the Patriarch was troubled by the slanders. On May 3, 1890, Sophronios relieved Metropolitan Nektarios of his duties; in July of the same year, he commanded Nektarios to leave Egypt.

Without seeking to avenge or even to defend himself, the innocent Metropolitan left for Athens, where he found that accusations of immorality had arrived before him. Because his good name had been soiled, he was unable to find a position worthy of a bishop, and in February of 1891 accepted the position of Provincial preacher in Evoia; then, in 1894, he was appointed Dean of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School in Athens. Through his eloquent sermons, his unwearying labors to educate fitting men for the Priesthood, his generous almsdeeds despite his own poverty, and the holiness , meekness, and fatherly love that were manifest in him, he became a shining light and a spiritual guide to many. At the request of certain pious women, in 1904 he began the building of his Women’s Monastery of the Holy Trinity on the island of Aegina while Dean of the Rizarios School, finding later that his presence there was needed, he took residence on Aegina in 1908, where he spent the last years of his life, devoting himself to the direction of his Women’s Monastery and to very intense prayer; he was sometimes seen lifted above the ground while rapt in prayer. He became the protector of all Aegina, through his prayers delivering the island from droughts, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Here also he endured wicked slanders with singular patience, forgiving his false accusers and not seeking to avenge himself. Although he had already worked wonders in life an innumerable multitude of miracles have been wrought after his repose in 1920 through his holy relics, which for many years remained incorrupt. There is hardly a malady that has not been cured through his prayers, but Saint Nektarios is especially renowned for his healings of cancer for sufferers of all parts of the world. ALL ANGELS, according to the Holy Apostle Paul, are ministering spirits,"sent forth to minister to them who shall be heirs of salvation" [Hebrews 1:14]. God set them as OVERSEERS OF EVERY NATION AND PEOPLE, and GUIDES TO THAT WHICH IS PROFITABLE [Deuteronomy 32:8]; and while one Angel is appointed to oversee each nation as a whole, ONE IS ALSO APPOINTED TO PROTECT EACH CHRISTIAN INDIVIDUALLY. He commands them to guard them that hope on Him, that nothing should harm them, neither should any evil draw near to their dwelling [Psalm 10-12]. In the Heavens they always BEHOLD THE FACE OF GOD, sending up to Him the Thrice-Holy Hymn and interceding with Him in our behalf, seeing they rejoice over one sinner that repents [Isaiah 6:23; Matthew 18:10; Luke 15:7]. In a word, they have served God in so many ways for our benefit, that the pages of Holy Scripture are filled with the histories thereof. It is for these reasons that the Holy Orthodox Catholic Church, wisely honoring theses Divine Ministers, OUR PROTECTORS AND GUARDIANS, celebrated today Synaxis, that is, OUR COMING TOGETHER IN ASSEMBLY FOR THEIR COMMON FEAST TO CHANT PRAISES, ESPECIALLY FOR THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL and GABRIEL, who are mentioned in the Holy Scriptures by name. The name Michael means "Who is like God" and Gabriel means "God is Mighty." The number of the Angels is not defined in the Divine Scripture, where Daniel says that "THOUSANDS OF THOUSANDS MINISTERED BEFORE HIM, AND TEN THOUSANDS OF TEN THOUSANDS ATTENDED UPON HIM" [Daniel 7:10]. But all of them are DIVIDED INTO NINE (9) ORDERS which is are called THRONES, CHERUBIM, SERAPHIM, DOMINIONS, POWERS, AUTHORITIES, PRINCIPALITIES, ARCHANGELS, AND ANGELS.

A MORE INDEPTH ACCOUNT ON THE ARCHANGELS AND ALL BODILESS AND
HEAVENLY RANKS ACCORDING TO THE SACRED ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN
TRADITION

Concerning Angels, Saint John of Damascus writes: "God Himself the Maker and Creator of the Angels; for He brought them out of nothing into being and created them after His own image. They are an INCORPOREAL RACE, a sort of spirit or IMMATERIAL FIRE, even as the divine David says that "His Angels are spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire [Psalm 103:6]. By this, he has described their lightness and the ardor, heat, keenness, and sharpness with which they hunger for God and serve Him. He also has disclosed how they are borne to the regions above and re quite delivered from all material thoughts.

"An Angel, then, is AN INTELLIGENT ESSENCE, IN PERPETUAL MOTION, WITH FREE WILL, INCORPOREAL, MINISTERING TO TOD, HAVING BY GRACE AN IMMORTAL NATURE. The Creator alone knows the form and limitation of hte Angelic essence; but all that we can understand is that it is incorporeal and immaterial. For all that is compared with God , Who alone is incomparable, we find to be dense and material. For in reality only the Deity is IMMATERIAL AND INCORPOREAL.
"The Angel’s nature then is RATIONAL, and INTELLIGENT, and endowed with FREE-WILL, changeable in will, or fickle. For ALL THAT IS CREATED IS CHANGEABLE AND ONLY THAT WHICH IS UNCREATED IS UNCHANGEABLE. Also, all that is rational is endowed with free-will. As the Angel is then, rational and intelligent, this being is endowed with free will; andas this being is created, it is changeable, having power either to abide or progress in goodness, or to turn toward evil. "They are not susceptible to repentance because they are incorporeal. For it is owing to the weakness of his body that man comes to have repentance.

"Seeing that they are minds, they are in mental places, and are not circumscribed after the fashion of a body. For THEY HAVE NOT A BODILY FORM BY NATURE, NOR ARE THEY EXTENDED IN THREE DIMENSIONS. But to whatever post they may be assigned, there they are present, after the manner of a mind, and they energize, but they CANNOT BE PRESENT AND ENERGIZE IN VARIOUS PLACES AT THE SAME TIME.

"Whether they are equals in essence or differ from one another we know not, God, their Creator, Who knows all things, alone knows. But they differ from each other IN BRIGHTNESS AND PASSION, whether it is that their position is dependent on their brightness to one another, because the excel one another in rank and nature; clearly, the higher share their brightness and knowledge with the lower.

"They are mighty and prompt to fulfill the will of God, and their nature is endowed with such celerity that, wherever the Divinie glace bids them, there they are straightway found. They are the guardians of the divisions of the earth. They are set over nations and regions, allotted to them by their Creator. They govern all our affairs and bring us succor. The reason surely is because they are set over us by the Divine Will and command and are eer in the vicinity of God.

"Moreover, as that most holy, and sacred, and gifted theologian, Saint Dionysios the Areopagite, says, "All theology, that is to say, the Holy Scripture, has Nine different names for the heavenly essences. These essences, that divine master in sacred things, divides into THREE GROUPS, EACH CONTAINING THREE. And the First Group, he says, consists of those who are in God’s presence and are said to be directly and immediately one with Him, namely, THE SERAPHIM WITH THEIR WINGS, THE MANY-EYED CHERUBIM, AND THOSE THAT SIT IN THE HOLIEST THRONES. The Second Group is that of the DOMINIONS, and the POWERS, and the AUTHORITIES, and the Third, and last, is that of the PRINCIPALITIES and ARCHANGELS and ANGELS.

THE NAMES OF THE ARCHANGELS

In the Sacred Scripture, we find the names of some of the Archangels. Archangel Michael, whose name signifies "Who is like unto God?" may be found in Daniel 10:13, 12:1; Jude 1:9, and Revelation 12:7-8. Archangel Gabriel, whose name signifies "Man of God," may be found in Daniel 8:16, 9:21, and Luke 1:19-26. In the Deutero-Canonical Books, the Archangel Raphael, whose name signifies "God heals," may be found in Tobit 3:17, 12:15. Archangel Uriel, whose name signifies "The Fire of God", or Archangel Jeremiel, whose name signifies The highness or mercy of God, may be found in 2 Esdras 4:36. Archangel Uriel is also listed in 1 Esdras 4:1. Archangel Salathiel, whose name signifies "Prayer to God", or Archangel Phaltiel or Psaltiel may be found in 2 Esdras 5:16. Apart from these names, although pious traditions lists two other Archangels, they are not listed in Holy Scripture: Jehudiel, whose name signifies "The praise of God", and Barachiel, whose name signifies "The blessing of God." The roster of the Archangels, showing these alternative names, abounds. It is generally agreed, however, that there are seven.

"Of the future both the Angels of God and the demons ARE ALIKE IGNORANT, YET THEY MAKE PREDICTIONS. God reveals the future to the Angels and commands them to prophesy, and so what they say comes to pass. But the demons also make predictions, sometimes because they see what is happening at a distance, and sometimes merely making guesses. Hence much that they say is false, and they should not be believed, even though they do often, in the way we have said, tell what is true; besides, they know the Scriptures.

"ALL WICKEDNESS, then, and all impure passions are the work of their mind. But while the liberty to attack man has been granted to them, THEY HAVE NOT THE STRENGTH TO OVERMASTER ANYONE; FOR WE HAVE IT IN OUR POWER TO RECEIVE OR NOT TO RECEIVE THE ATTACK. Thus, there has been prepared for the devil and his demons, and those who follow him, FIRE UNQUENCHABLE AND EVERLASTING PUNISHMENT. [Resources: The Great Synaxaristes of the Orthodox Church]

CONCERNING THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD ACCORDING TO THE HOLY ORTHODOX CHURCH

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ Our Only True Lord, God, and Savior,

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! HE WAS, IS, AND EVER SHALL BE.

CONCERNING THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD
ACCORDING TO THE HOLY ORTHODOX
CHURCH.

The attributes of God, taken directly from the word of God, are set forth in Metropolitan Philaret’s "Longer Catechism of the Orthodox Catholic , Eastern Church." Here we read: "Question: What idea of the Essence and essential attributes of God may be derived from Divine Revelation? Answer: That God is A Spirit, Eternal, All-Good, Omniscient, Righteous, Almighty, Omnipresent, Unchangeable, All-Sufficing to Himself, All-Blessed."

OMNIPRESENT. "Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the
morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me" [Psalm 139:7-9].

GOD is not subject to any limitations in space, but He fills EVERYTHING. Filling everything God, as a simple Being, IS PRESENT IN EVERY PLACE, NOT AS IT WERE IN SOME PART OF Him, or by merely sending down some power from Himself, but in all His Being; and He is not confused with that in which He is present. "The Divinity penetrates everything without being mingled with anything, but nothing can penetrate Him" [Saint John Damascene).  "That God is present everywhere we know, but how, we do not understand, because we can understand only a sensuous presence, and it is not given to us to understand fully the Nature of God" [Saint John Chrysostom].

The Holy Orthodox Christian Church teaching emphasizes God’s OMNIPRESENCE, which is the belief that God IS PRESENT EVERYWHERE because His power and knowledge extend to all parts of creation. Knowing the whole of His good creation, God the Father dwells within the world that He has made because of His goodness and lover for man. The OMNIPRESENCE OF GOD is one of the Divine Attributes of the Creator particularly stressed in Orthodox Christian theology. This very fact is directly affirmed in the prayer to the Holy Spirit which is used as the opening prayer of Orthodox worship:

"O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the
Spirit of Truth, Who are everywhere
and fillest all things. Treasury of
Blessings and Giver of Life! Come
and abide in us. And cleanse us from
every impurity. And save our souls,
O Good One!"

Another Psalm which reveals God’s Omnipresence is Psalm 139:7-12:

"Whither shall I go from Thy Spirit?
Or whither shall I flee from Thy
Presence?
If I ascend to heaven, Thou are
there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, Thou art
there
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of
the sea,
even there Thy hand shall lead me,
and Thy right hand shall hold me.
If I say, ‘Let only darkness cover me,
andand the light about me be night,’
even the darkness is not dark to
Thee, the night is bright as the day;
for darkness is as light with Thee!

God did not abandon the world which He created to its own fate, but CONTINUES, THROUGH HIS PROVIDENCE, TO CARE FOR IT; PRESERVING IT, GOVERNING IT, AND DIRECTING IT TO ITS FINAL PURPOSE. For this reason, we not only "confess God" as Creator, but "WE UNDERSTAND THAT ALL ARE GOVERNED BY HIS PROVIDENCE ONLY", God "Not only having brought the universe into being, but preserving and shaping… all viable and invisible creation enjoys His Providence, without which (God’s assistance and cooperation) they would cease to exist, would disappear, would be annihilated."

God’s preservation and governance extend throughout the entire universe, and to each being separately, so that, together with the cooperation of the Divine power and Providence with the natural and spiritual powers and laws of the universe, THE PLAN OF GOD IS COMPLETED. NOTHING IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE HAPPENS BY ACCIDENT, UNKNOWN TO THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD.

"Do not say anything automatically came into being by itself i.e., like the so-called "Big-bang theory." Nothing springs out of disorder, out of infinity, just by chance. Nothing moves about the universe accidentally, or out of luck, having been brought about by some evil hour or moment. Such are but the imaginings of uncultured peoples. Nothing IS WITHOUT PROVIDENCE, nothing is NEGLECTED BY GOD. The SLEEPLESS EYE OF GOD BEHOLDS ALL, IS PRESENT EVERYWHERE, DESIRING THE SALVATION OF HIS OWN." But the Divine Providence, while cooperating when man does good, naturally DOES NOT COOPERATE AT ALL WHEN MAN, IN HIS FREE CHOICE, DECIDES TO WORK EVIL. In such an instance, the Divine Providence becomes a "concession to tree wil." However, "we believe that all that exists, whether visible or unseen, IIS GOVERNED BY THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD. AS FOR EVIL EVENTS WHICH OCCUR, GOD FORESAW THEM ALL AND ALLOWS THEM TO COME ABOUT, BUT HE DOES NOT CAUSE THEM, FOR HE IS NOT THE CREATOR OF EVIL, BUT HAD INTENDED ALL PEOPLE AND EVENTS FOR SOME GOOD PURPOSE, GOD BEING HIMSELF ABSOLUTELY GOOD."

In God, one attribute is an aspect of another. "God is Righteous: this implies that He is also Blessed and Good and Spirit. The multiple simplicity in God is like the light of the sun, which reveals itself in the various colors which are received by bodies on the earth, for example, by plants. Saint John Damascene writes: "God is Unoriginate, Unending, Eternal, Constant, Uncreated, Unchanging, Unalterable, Simple, Incomplex, Bodiless, Invisible, Intangible, Indescribable, without bounds, Inaccessible to the mind, Uncontainable, Incomprehensible, Good, Righteous, the Creator of All creatures, the Almighty Pantokrator, He Who looketh down upon all, whose Providence is over everything, Who has dominion over all, the Judge."

Our thoughts about God in general speak: (1) either about His distinction from the created world (for example, God is Unoriginate, while the world has an origin: He is endless, while the world has an end; He is Eternal, while the world exists in time); or (2) about the activities of God in thie world and the relation of the Creator to His creations (Creator, Providence, Merciful, Righteous Judge).

In indicating the ATTRIBUTES of God, WE DO NOT THEREBY GIVE A "DEFINITION" of the concept of God. Such a definition IS ESSENTIALLY IMPOSSIBLE, BECAUSE EVERY DEFINITION IS AN INDICATION OF "FINITENESS" and signifies limitedness, incompleteness. But IN GOD THERE ARE NO LIMITS, AND THEREFORE THERE CANNOT BE A DEFINITION OF THE CONCEPT OF THE Divinity: "For a concept is itself A FORM OF LIMITATION" (Saint Gregory the Theologian, Homily 28, his Second Theological Oration).

Our very reason demands the acknowledgment in God of a whole series of Essential Attributes. Reason tells us that God has a rational, free, and PERSONAL existence. If in the imperfect world we see free and rational PERSONAL beings, we cannot fail to recognize a free and rational personal existence in God Himself, Who is the Source, Cause, and Creator of All life.

Reason tells us that God is A MOST PERFECT Being. Every lack and imperfection ARE INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE CONCEPT OF "GOD."
Reason tells us that THE MOST PERFECT BEING CAN BE ONLY SINGULAR: GOD IS ONE. There cannot be two perfect beings, since one would limit the other.
Reason tells us THAT GOD IS A SELF-EXISTING BEING, since nothing can be the cause or condition of the existence of God. [Resources: Orthodox Dogmatic Theology by Protopresbyter Michael Pomazansky]

THE WAR BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ Our Only True Lord, God, and Savior,

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! HE WAS, IS, AND EVER SHALL BE.

THE WAR BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL

"And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his Angels fought with
the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not
prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the
great dragon was cast out , that serpent of old, called the Devil and
Satan, WHO DECEIVES THE WHOLE WORLD, HE WAS CAST OUT
WITH HIM" [Revelation 12:7-9].

The Almighty God and Divine Creator created all things, including Angels and humans, as good and beautiful. Lucifer was an Angel who abused his free will and rebelled against God. Lucifer’s fall was THE FIRST INSTANCE OF EVIL, and he became known as Satan. Lucifer, whose very name (literally meaning "LIGHT-BEARING") indicates that originally he was good. By his OWN WILL he changed from his natural state into one which was UNNATURAL; he rebelled against God out of pride and fell away from grace and good into evil. Lucifer, also called the devil [Greek diavolos – 'divider', 'separator', 'slanderer'], belonged to one of the highest ranks in the Angelic Hierarchy. Together with him other angels also defected, as the Book of Apocalypse (Revelation) tells us metaphorically: "And a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch…and A THIRD OF THEIR LIGHT WAS DARKENED" [Revelation 8: 10-12].

"Then, the Fifth Angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him
was given the key to the BOTTOMLESS PIT. And he opened the bottomless. And he opened
the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the
sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit" [Revelation 9:1-2].

By exercising their own free will the devil and his demons found themselves in darkness. Every reasonable living creature, whether Angel or human being, possesses FREE WILL: THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL. Free will is the property of everyone so that we can, by practicing good, become an ontological part of that good. In other words, GOODNESS WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE GRANTED EXTERNALLY TO US BUT MUST BECOME OUR VERY OWN POSSESSION. If God IMPOSED GOODNESS as a necessity or an inevitability, then no one could ever become A PERFECTLY FREE PERSON. ‘Nobody has ever become good by force’, says Saint Symeon the New Theologian. Through UNCEASING GROWTH IN VIRTUE the Angels were meant to ASCEND TO THE PLENITUDE OF PERFECTION, TO THE POINT OF UTTER ASSIMILATION TO THE GOD OF SUPREME GOODNESS. Yet some of them chose TO REJECT GOD and thereby sealed their own fate and the fate of the universe, which from that moment onwards became an arena for two contending polar (yet not equal) principles and powers: THE DIVINE AND THE DEMONIC, God and the evil.

Orthodox Theology viewed the nature and origin of evil differently. Evil is NOT a primeval essence that is coeternal and equal to God; IT IS A FALLING AWAY FROM GOOD, IT IS A REVOLT AGAINST GOOD. In this sense it would be wrong to call evil a ‘substance’, as it does NOT exist inits own right. As darkness or shadow are not independent beings but are simply the absence or lack of light, so EVIL IS MERELY THE ABSENCE OF GOOD. "EVIL," writes Saint Basil the Great, "IS NOT A LIVING AND ANIMATED SUBSTANCE, BUT A CONDITION OF THE SOUL WHICH IS OPPOSED TO VIRTUE AND WHICH SPRINGS UP IN THE SLOTHFUL BECAUSE OF THEIR FALLING AWAY FROM GOOD. Do not imagine some original nature of wickedness, but let each one recognize himself as the first author of the vice that is in him."

God DID NOT CREATE ANYTHING EVIL: BOTH ANGELS AND HUMANS, AS WELL AS THE MATERIAL WORLD, ARE GOOD AND BEAUTIFUL BY NATURE. However, rational creatures, POSSESSING FREE WILL, CAN DIRECT THEIR FREEDOM AGAINST GOD AND THEREBY ENGENDER EVIL. This is precisely what happened: THE LIGHT-BEARING MORNING STAR (LUCIFER), ORIGINALLY CREATED GOOD, ABUSED HIS FREEDOM, DEFACED HIS OWN VIRTUOUS NATURE AND FELL AWAY FROM THE SOURCE OF GOODNESS. [Diocese of Sourozh, Patriarchate of Moscow]

In the New Testament our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ speaks of the devil whom He called "prince of this world" [John 12:31, 14:30, 16:11) in this way:

"He was a murderer from the beginning,
and has nothing to do with the truth because
there is no truth in him.   When he lies, he speaks
according to his own nature, for he is A LIAR
AND THE FATHER OF LIES" [John 8:44].

The devil and his multitude of evil spirits, "the principalities… the powers… the world rulers of this present darkness… the spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places" [Ephesians 6:12] WAR AGAINST MAN SEEKING TO DESTROY HIM BY ENSNARING HIM IN SIN. "Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour" [1 Peter 5:8].

Our Lord God the Christ HAS DESTROYED THE POWER OF THE DEVIL. He came into the world precisely for this reason. If one is "in Christ" he is led out of temptation and delivered from the evil one. If one is in Christ, the evil, who is also called Satan, which means the A dversary who "disguises himself as an angel of light" [2  Corinthians 11:14], CANNOT DECEIVE OR HARM HIM. TO BE VICTORIOUS OVER THE ALLURING AND DECEIVING TEMPTATIONS OF THE DEVIL IS THE GOAL OF SPIRITUAL LIFE. [Orthodox Church in America]

The world, as we know it, has been at war with the evil one, who hates humanity, and seeks its destruction, for a very long time. The devil and his angels (demons) do explore us INDIVIDUALLY, LOOKING FOR OUR WEAKNESSES. The enemy offers appealing visions to our eyes, music to our ears, to each of our senses setting forth whatever might TEMPT US TO SIN. He arouses our tongues of speaking evil about others and urges our hands to injure them. He sets froth profits to be earned by shady and immoral means and holds out EARTHLY HONORS AND FALSE VALUES TO BE PREFERRED TO HEAVENLY ONES, When he is unable to tempt us, he brings forth a threat of persecution to that fear may cause us to betray the faith. Thus we are ALWAYS ALERT TO HIS MANY-FACETED ATTACKS, READY TO RESIST HIM IN EVERY TURN.

It has, therefore, been established that humanity has a fierce and deadly enemy who never sleeps, is never hungry, is never thirsty and ready to devour you. Our enemy, the devil, is much more cunning, more deceptive, more sinister, more manipulative, and the father of lies. He is our most dangerous and formidable opponent. In order to confront and battle against him we need God’s help. We, however, who have been baptized into Him need not be defeated when temptations come along because, like Jesus, we are aided by the Holy Spirit. It is imperative that we are obsessed with material things, not to love ease and comfort, to willingly accept the struggle necessary to purify us from evil. We must not subordinate our souls to the passions of the body. If Satan can put Our Lord and Savior Christ to the test it is logical then that he will do the same with each and everyone of us.

Evil, lying, deception, manipulation, is prevalent in our society today. We observe it, we feel it, we listen to it, we witness it, and we see that it brings misery, pain, confusion, defective reasoning, and darkness throughout the world. Evil is fearless and defiant. Evil does not play with rules and fairness. The more the world becomes estranged and alienated from God the more we view its manifestation in all walks of life but especially in politics, business and many of the secular professions. Evildoers are content to do the bidding of the evil one and yet present themselves as benevolent and righteous. These people can never be trusted or confided. Do Christians need to be reminded that He is the ONLY TRUTH? He Himself declares to the whole world, "I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE" [John 14:6]. When the believers follow Christ Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, they have nothing to fear. No faithful Christian with strong discernment can ever be deceived or possessed by evil. Good people are the people who tell the truth, who live the truth and who adhere to the truth.

The Christians’ weapon against all evil is prayer, fasting, repentance. Also, every believer abides by God’s Commandments, the Teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and of the Holy Apostles, Holy Fathers and Mothers of the Church and the great example of the Holy Ascetics and Monastics of living a life of holiness and piety. Christians have always remained obedient to Christ even under exile, imprisonement, torture and horriic suffering. Let us remain steadfast in our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ and He will indeed "deliver us from the evil one" [Matthew 6:13]. In other words we pray that great temptations, tests beyond what we can bear should not come our way. Our Merciful God and Savior always hears our prayers, guides us, protects us and by His grace we triumph over the evil one and all other evildoers.

IS HUMANITY NEARING THE PRECIPICE?

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ Our Only True Lord, God, and Savior,

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! HE WAS, IS, AND EVER SHALL BE.

IS HUMANITY NEARING THE PRECIPICE?

It is absolutely necessary that people with any kind of wisdom ask the question: how near is humanity near the terminal precipice? Is humanity’s future near its final destruction? There are ominous signs and global conditions that indicate clearly mankind has arrived at the dreaded precipice. Mankind faces existential threats such as a nuclear world III which, if it takes place, would be the annihilation of the human race and the world as we know it. It is therefore necessary that world leaders and powers act immediately to prevent it, otherwise it will be too late.

The world in which we live in, has, it seems, become a much smaller place. Technologically humanity has made great strides and life and communication throughout the world has improved because of it. However, the basic and fundamental issues of humanity have not been resolved satisfactorily for all. Mankind keeps on repeating the same mistakes again and again. When will humanity learn from its catastrophic errors? How many more millions of human lives must be lost in order for us to come to our senses?

There are tragically those who seek to sanitize human existence from any religious belief in order to advance their own dark and wicked agenda. These individuals who, like the tyrants and dictators of old, desire world domination. They are powerful and extremely wealthy individuals who have formed a shadow world or global government and who are convinced that the world is theirs and everyone else is there to blindly be obedient to them and to willingly be their modern day serfs. They have no respect for life and therefore they actually consider other human beings as cattle, and a much lower form of living beings to be used as they see fit.

It is said that in Roman times when a wealthy Roman citizen bought a slave at the slave market would immediately cut a lock of hair from his/her head to make clear to the slave that his/her new master owned him/her completely, that his master expected total obedience, would serve him until his/her end of his life and would even have the power to take his/her life. In other words the master of the slave had total control over him or her. It seems that the globalist elite today have a similar attitude towards people and wish to control the human race to the point of mandating them to eat insects instead of eating meat, to drive electric cars, to elect only into governmental office the people they have chosen, to read what they want them to read, to turn away from God, to abolish all morality, for their children to be indoctrinated with their ideology, to abolish family as we know it, to be forbidden to own their own house, to be deprived of having a voice or an opinion of their own, to be medicated with drugs that are chosen by the authorities, to destroy their religious, cultural, and ethnic identity,

The question however is, are these the signs of impending catastrophe and our approaching the precipice? Everyone has his/her views and understanding of world events and challenges but we still have to be alert and be aware of the things that occur around us. The earth is not our creation but God’s. Although the whole world is God’s gift to humanity, He, however, continues to be its Overseer and Preserver of all His creation. Man was given the responsibility and duty to be the world’s steward, and to take good care of it. In the Book of Genesis we read, "Then God said, I have given you every seed-bearing herb that sows seed on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. I also give every green plant as food for all the wild animals of the earth, for all the birds of heaven, and for everything that creeps on the earth in which is the breath of life" [Genesis 1:29-31]. God finished the making of heaven and earth for man’s sake and, therefore, man became its caretaker and protector.

Another world-wide dangerous sign is the total corruption of world governments. Governments that have ceased to serve the citizens and instead decided to lord over them. Governments that became autocratic, tyrannical, abusive, authoritarian, deceptive, manipulative, and controlling. Governments that seek to control every aspect of human life and to threaten those who do not adhere to their laws or rules. Governments that desire to abduct the children away from their parents and make life-altering decisions without the consent of the parents. Governments that determine what students will be taught at schools, their sexual orientation, what books to read, and to disrespect and be disobedient to their parents.

The most crucial threat to mankind’s future is the effort to abolish all faith. Christianity is the principal target of these secular, paganistic and atheistic governments. Each of these governments are determined to replace the belief in God with themselves. Under communism in the Soviet Union, Stalin mandated that the Orthodox Christians remove the holy icon of Christ hanging in their homes and replace it with his own picture. A world without God, without faith, is a world devoid of all life, light, hope, goodness, truth, joy, and salvation. A Godless world is Hell. According to the Holy Scripture Hell is Eternal punishment, of endless torment, a place of darkness, unquenchable fire, and where the devil reigns. It would be unconscionable for anyone wishing to change the beautiful world into something hideous and grotesque. There are, however, those who are spiritually dead, who are filled with hatred, wickedness, joylessness, and meanness, that defy God openly, and who prefer hell over the Kingdom of God. These kinds of people must never be given the power or authority to govern humanity and determine its destiny.

On the 1st of November, Our Holy Orthodox Church Commemorates the holy and Wonderworking Unmercenaries KOSMAS and DAMIANOS of Asia.

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ Our Only True Lord, God and Savior,

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! HE WAS, IS, AND EVER SHALL BE.

On the 1st of November, Our Holy Orthodox Church Commemorates
the holy and Wonderworking Unmercenaries KOSMAS and
DAMIANOS of Asia.

Apolytikion (Dismissal) Hymn. Plagal of Fourth Tone

O HOLY Unmercenaries and Wonderworkers, visit our infirmities;
freely ye received, freely give to us.

Kontakion Hymn. Second Tone

HAVING received the grace of healing, ye extend health to those in
need, O glorious and wonderworking physicians. Hence, by your
visitation, cast down the audacity of our enemies, and by your
miracles, heal the world.

These Saints were from Asia (that is, Asia Minor). After the death of their father, their Christ-loving mother Theodote reared them in piety and in all manner of virtue, and had them instructed in every science, especially that of medicine. This became their diakonia (ministry), and they went about healing every illness and malady, bestowing healing freely on both men and beasts (animals) alike; because of this, they are called "Unmercenaries." And this, having completed the course of their life, they reposed in peace.

A MORE DETAILED ACCOUNT IN THE LIFE OF THE HOLY UNMERCENARIES

Saints Kosmas and Damianos (Damian), were siblings and holy martyrs. Our Holy Church also commemorates two other sets of holy Unmercenaries, who shared the names of Kosmas and Damianos. We differentiate them by Province. The second pair, commemorated on the 1st of July, lived in Rome during the reign of Emperor Carinus (283-285 A.D.), whom they converted. They also met a martyric end by stoning. The third pair, hailing from Arabia, commemorated on the 17th of October, lived during the time of Diocletian and Maximian (292 A.D.). Together with three other brothers, Leontios, Anthimos, and Evtropios (or Evprepios), they were cast into the sea, thrown into a blazing furnace, and nailed to a cross, before they were finally beheaded in Lycia.

We now need to speak of Saints Kosmas and Damianos of Asia. They were called unmercenaries, because they healed the sick without receiving any payment, whether it be money or gifts, for their labors fulfilling the Gospel command: "Freely ye received, freely give" [Matthew 10:8]. The brothers were from a well-to-do family. Their father had been a Greek pagan, but later, after he begat Kosmas and Damianos, he denied vile idolatry and embraced Christianity. He managed his life in a virtuous, prudent, and sober manner. Not much time passed, however, before he surrendered his soul to his Creator. Their mother, Theodote, had been a Christian from girlhood. Being left a widow, she diligently pursued the rearing and education of her sons, though more so toward piety and reverence. She also was a woman of uncommon excellence and was a model of womanly virtue to all those in the neighborhood. Her sons applied themselves conscientiously to the study of medicine, and they learned their art exceedingly well. After they had finished their studies, they immediately commenced their philanthropic work. Their primary treatment was not the curing of bodies as much as the healing of souls, by preaching in every place and at all times the name of the Christ.

Conducting their lives in this manner, the holy physicians were vouchsafed Apostolic gifts of grace; for they also received the gift of healing, given by Christ to His Holy Apostles to cure every kind of sickness. This means that, without herbs, plasters, and other therapeutic treatments, they cured every illness by the grace of the All-Holy Spirit. How can one describe the brothers’ humility, poverty, philanthropy, and other virtues which they possessed even as Christ’s Apostles? Their humility was such that they personally treated every patient’s wounds. Their poverty was profound that they possessed neither money, nor a second garment, nor even a bag for the road. The people did not address them by their first names, Kosmas and Damianos, bu "Unmercenaries," and thus the surname designated both of them. All were treated on an equal basis, whether the patient was rich or poor, or a foreigner or fellow countryman. Their home was the site of the new sheep pool of Bethesda (John 5:2), which surpassed the one of old. Their clinic was open daily, and many witnessed cures each day upon the stretching forth of the healing hands of the wise physicians Kosmas and Damianos. Their almsgiving and love for all was of such a degree that they even cured irrational beasts (animals).

The holy brothers shared a single character and soul in their faith, fasting, and works. They were like-minded i disdaining hte corruptible things of the world, rejecting the enjoyment of pleasures, and preserving their chastity. Dead to the things of this world, they cut off the sickness of avarice. They were inhabitants of heaven, though they dwelt in the flesh. The Saints, indeed, were accounted worthy of such grace from God as to heal every illness. They, however, DID NOT ATTRIBUTE THE RESTORATION OF THEIR PATIENTS’ HEALTH TO THEIR SKILL OR ART, BUT INSTEAD NAMED THE SOURCE OF THE REMEDY OPENLY: THE GRACE OF GOD. The art of medicine was not able to heal the blind, nor cause the lame to walk, nor faise the dead; but the name of the Christ, restoration was energized for all these. As a result, people from afar heard of the power of the Saints’ Wonderworkings, so that every day people were hastening to their clinic, bringing the infirm, afflicted, blind, lame, demonized, and those bedridden with every kind of malady. No patient left without receiving benefit, not only infirmities of the body, but also THE DARKNESS OF EVIL SPIRITS.

Once, the Saints were summoned to a grievously ill woman named Palladia, whom all the doctors had refused to treat because of her seemingly hopeless condition. Through faith and through the fervent prayer of the holy brothers, the Lord healed the deadly disease and Palladia got up from her bed perfectly healthy and gave praise to God. In gratitude for being healed and wishing to give them a small gift, Palladia went quietly to Damianos. She presented him with three eggs and said, "Take this small gift in the Name of the Holy Life-Creating Trinity, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." Hearing the Name of the Holy Trinity, the Unmercenary one did not dare to refuse.

When Saint Kosmas learned what had happened, became very sad, for he thought that his brother had violated their strict vow. On his deathbed he gave instructions that his brother should not be buried beside him. Saint Damianos also died shortly afterward and everyone wondered where Saint Damiano’s grave should be. But through the will of God a miracle occurred. A camel, which the Saints had treated for its wildness, spoke with a human voice saying that they should have no doubts about whether to place Damianos beside Kosmas, because Damianos DID NOT ACCEPT THE EGGS FROM THE WOMAN AS PAYMENT, BUT OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE NAME OF GOD. The Venerable holy relics of the holy brothers were buried together at Thereman (Mesopotamia).

Let us not, O blessed Christians, disbelieve this miraculous account; for "the things impossible with men are possible with God" [Luke 18:27]. Countless miracles were worked after death of the holy Unmercenaries. Let us, also, have recourse to them and hasten to them with faith and love. They made themselves wholly the abode of the Holy Trinity. Even to this day they pour forth torrents of healing. Their very names drive away infirmities. Thus, we entreat the Holy Unmercenaries to drive away the dark passions and impart healing of soul and body to those who are grievously ailing. "For as most excellent physicians," chants Saint John of Damascus, "in a mystical manner, they practice their art of surgery, dispensing medicines for salvation, and treating every malady, by drawing upon the Divine Treasury, while by hymning to the Most Glorious God.

“HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER” Exodos 20:12

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ Our Only True Lord, God, and Savior,

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! HE WAS, IS, AND EVER SHALL BE.

GOD’S COMMANDMENTS

"HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER that it may be well
with you, and your days may be long upon the good land
the Lord your God is giving you" [Exodos 20:12]

The Almighty and All-Merciful God offers no rewards in the prohibitions of the Ten Commandments. God’s promise of reward is offered to those who keep the positive ones. For example, to HONOR ONE’S FATHER AND MOTHER is the FIRST COMMANDMENT IN THE TEN TO PROMISE A REWARD, NAMELY, A LONG AND SPIRITUALLY PROSPEROUS LIFE ON EARTH.

The Greek word is τιμή (ti-mee) which means the honor in which one is held, worship, esteem, respect, and hold worthy or in reverence. Also, to value, charish, love. An offering to God. In Orthodox Christian theology honor is the act of showing respect, recognition, and dignity to others. Especially, we honor God by acknowledging, appreciating, valuing, and exalting His Divine attributes and acts. This can be done by giving God the supreme position in one’s life, and heart. In our Holy Orthodox Tradition we glorify the Saints as a way to acknowledge and recognize that God’s Holiness is manifested in the Church.

The Holy Apostle Peter writes, "Honor all people" [1 Peter 2:17] knowing that all people are children of God and that we were all created by Him in His "image and likeness". By honoring our brothers and sisters in the world, we acknowledge that it is very important and we, therefore, "love the brotherhood" [1 Peter 2:17]. "Having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary BLESSING, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing" [1 Peter 3:8-9]. The Church as a corporate priesthood is to express God’s GRACIOUSNESS TO THE ENTIRE WORLD. As we have been blessed by Him we must also bless others.

As Orthodox Christians we honor and glorify the Theotokos for she was chosen by God to give birth to His Son Jesus Christ. "And the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most HIgh; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of His kingdom there will be no end" [Luke 1:26-38].

We honor and glorify the Saints. The glorification of Saints in our Holy Church is a recognition that God’s holiness is manifested in the Church through these grace filled men, women and children whose lives were pleasing to the Almighty God. Believers who were willing to suffer, and sacrifice their life for the sake of Christ. We also honor the church, the consecrated place where we worship and honor and receive the Sacred Mysteries [Sacraments]. In the Sacrament of marriage and specifically at the Crowning, when the priest places crowns on the heads of the bride and groom he chants a brief hymn, "Lord our God, crown them with glory and honor." "This sacrament reveals the heavenly Kingdom to the world through the couple and their life together. Marriage is not a state of life, but a stage in the life of Christ for the couple, an essential dimension of their salvation." No secular marriage outside of the Orthodox Church is recognized since the couple is not united by the grace of God.

Honor is essential and most significant. Along with honor there is dignity, respect, reverence, love, gratitude, holiness, acknowledgement, and appreciation. Giving honor to others reveals how we truly feel for one another. Where there is an absence of honor, there is brutality, coarseness and rudeness. How can one consider himself or herself refined when they lack honor or dignity. Having personal honor in life is absolutely necessary if others are to respect us. A person of honor is one with definite and strong values, virtues, principles, fidelity, and courage. Take for example either an athlete or a soldier who is committed and who excels in his/her profession. It is common for us to honor these dedicated people who give of themselves and make sacrifices to succeed in their endeavor. We rewarded them with special ceremonies where we acknowledge their achievements and bestow upon them gold medals as in the case of an athlete. In the case of a soldier we promote them to a higher rank and also give them medals.

Turning to the ancient Greek philosophers and how they viewed honor we come to Aristotle who "believed that honor should be based on personal virtue, not the opinion of others." The concept of honor in Homer’s work is social, and is based "on one’s worth, the recognition of that worthy by others, and what one contributes to a group. Honor is also hierarchical with those in higher positions entitled to honor those below them." The Greek word for honor is ti-mee, and it was a central part of Greek culture. It was a symbol of worthiness, and was closely linked to social status and privilege. If you were an honorable person, you were valuable in the eyes of society. Honor afforded you the respect of your peers.

Shame moves in the opposite direction. Shame is the community removing honor (dishonor). There is no greater punishment than to be dishonored. Currently and in our contemporary society, honor has become a synonym for pride. Pride, of course, in our Christian faith is considered to be a grave sin. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, "Take care not to practice your righteousness publicly before men so as to be seen by them." However, honor is not pride. Honor is good, constructive, positive and something that everyone should strive to attain in life.

How is one to honor one’s father and mother? For centuries people would naturally honor their parents by respecting them, by appreciating all that they do for their children, by caring for them in their old age, by contributing to their household, by being obedient to them, by becoming good citizens, by excelling in their education, by having a good reputation, by working hard, by having strong morals, and following faithfully the teachings of God. In other words respect for parents is expressed by sacrificial love for them. The biblical word for "honor" however, is tima does not imply obedience but to respect and listen to your parents. To be willing to honor them by forgiving them and not be angry with them when they make a mistake. It is a serious sin and a crime to either mistreat, neglect, or abuse one’s parents.

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ honors His Mother and even from the Cross before He dies shows how much He loves and cares for her. "When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home" [John 19:26-27]. This is a true honor for one’s parents. How many parents today are placed in a nursing home by their children and then forgotten, or rarely visit them, or show any real concern for them? Does not this behavior indicate lack of respect, lack of gratitude for raising them and for always being there for them? What happened to God’s commandment to honor your father and mother?

Parents are not infallible or perfect but neither are children. Parents learn how to be good parents on the job. Naturally, they make many mistakes on how to best raise their children. There is no doubt, however, that their greatest gift to their children is love and constant prayers for God to keep them healthy and safe. They are most happy when their children progress spiritually and intellectually and when they succeed in whatever they try to do. Christian parents teach their children by example and by providing them with a Christian home where God is present and faith and prayer is abundant. Let us honor our parents and always pray that Christ God will grant them many good years. Amen.

The Holy Protection Agia Skepi of the Most Holy Theotokos celebrated on October 28th

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ Our Only True Lord, God, and Savior,

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! HE WAS, IS, AND EVER SHALL BE.

The Holy Protection [Agia Skepi] of the Most Holy Theotokos
celebrated on October 28th.

Apolytikion (Dismissal) Hymn of the Holy Protection. First Tone

O VIRGIN, we extol the great grace of thy Protection, which thou
didst spread out like a bright cloud beyond all understanding;
for thou dost invisibly protect thy people from the foe’s every assault.
Since we have thee as our shelter and certain help, we cry to thee with
our whole soul: Glory to thy great deeds, O Most Pure Maid. Glory to
thy shelter Most Divine. Glory to thy care and Providence for us, O
spotless one.

Kontakion Hymn of the Holy Protection. Plagal of Fourth Tone

LET us the faithful hasten to the Theotokos now and venerate her
SACRED VEIL, as we chant unto her, singing hymns to praise and
honor her, as is fitting; for she sheltereth with her shelter all her
faithful flock and preserveth them unharmed from all calamities,

Kontakion of the Holy Protection. Third Tone
(According to the Russian usage)

TODAY the Virgin doth stand before us in the church, and with the
choirs of Saints invisibly prayeth to God for us. Angels worship with
Hierarchs, Apostles rejoice with Prophets , for the Theotokos prayeth
for us to the Eternal God.
as they cry to her: Rejoice, Protection most radiant

The HOLY FEAST OF THE PROTECTION commemorates the appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary in the Church of Vlachernae in Constantinople in the early 6th century, as recorded in the life of Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ’s sake. While the multitudes of the Orthodox faithful were gathered in church, Epiphanios the friend of Saint Andrew, through the Saint’s prayers, beheld the Ever Virgin Mary above the faithful and spreading out her veil over them, signifying her UNCEASING PROTECTION OF ALL CHRISTIANS. Because of this we keep a yearly feast of gratitude, imploring our Lady never to cease sheltering us in her mighty prayers.

The Holy Feast is celebrated with particular fervor in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. In Ukraine, it has a special significance because of its connection to the spirituality of the Ukrainian Cossacks. In the Russian Orthodox Church, the feast is considered the patronal feast of the Cossacks, who defended the Russian Empire from its enemies.

In Greece, the Feast of the Holy Protection (Agia Skepi) is celebrated on October 28th. This is because in 1952, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece decreed that Greece would celebrate the feast on October 28th to coincide with the National holiday of "Oxi" ("No") Day. This day commemorates when Greece said "no" to fascism and Nazism during World Water II. It used to be celebrated on October 1st.

More information on the Holy Feast:

According to Tradition, in the year 911 A.D., during a time when the city was threatened by enemy forces, Saint Andrew the Fool-for-Christ witnessed a vision. In this vision, he saw the Virgin Mary, surrounded by a host of Angels, spreading her protective veil over the entire city and its people. fer

This miraculous vision was seen not only by Saint Andrew but also by his spiritual father, Saint Epiphanios, and many others who were present at the Vlachernae Church. In response to this heavenly apparition, the Orthodox Christians of Constantinople fervently prayed for the protection of the Theotokos, and their prayers were answered. The city was miraculously saved from its impending doom through the intercession of the Mother of God.

The Protection of the Theotokos is not merely a historical event to be commemorated; it carried profound spiritual significance for Orthodox Christians. Here are some key aspects of its importance:

Intercession of the Mother of God

The Ever-Virgin Mary holds a unique place in Christian Theology as the Mother of God (Theotokos). Orthodox Christians believe that she continues to intercede on behalf of the human race, bringing out prayers and supplications to her Divine Son, Jesus Christ our Savior. The Holy Feast reminds believers of the powerful role the Ever-Virgin Mary plays as a mediator between humanity and God.

Why do we call the Ever-Virgin Mary ‘Mother of God?’ we are asked by the visitor to our sacred services, "God has no mother." Of course not, but the Only-begotten Son of God, EQUAL TO THE Father and the Holy Spirit, entered the world through Mary’s womb, and for that we celebrate her as the bride of the Holy Spirit. The Greek term THEOTOKOS means just that; i.e. God bearer. The name "Theotokos" has a direct foundation in Sacred Scripture. The Holy Apostle Paul writes: "When the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman" [Galatians 4:4]. Here is expressed the truth that a woman gave birth to the Son of God. "God was manifest in the flesh" [1 Timothy 3:16]: the flesh was woven for God the Logos/Word by the Most Holy Virgin Mary. The Apostolic Father expressed themselves thus: "Our God Jesus Christ was in the womb of Mary."; "God took flesh of the Virgin Mary" (Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, Saint Irenaeus).

"More honorable than the cherubim and
more glorious beyond compare than the
seraphim, true Theotokos we magnify you".

The Ever-Virgin Mary truly deserves more honor from us even than the highest of the ranks of Angels surrounding the Throne of the Lord Almighty, because no cherub brought the Son of God into our world as a man. Far transcending any possible comparison we might conceive of in glory, greater than the seraphim is she to us, because no Angel could have been commissioned by the Heavenly Father to save us from sin, death and separation from God’s Kingdom, yet He found a way to do all three by having His Only-begotten Son enter time and space, born as on eof us, to lead us back to the relationship that the Holy Trinity planned for before the world was made.

At the meeting of the Virgin Mary, after the Annunciation, with the righteous Elizabeth, "Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she spake out with a loud voice, and said: ‘Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And when is this to me, that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?… And blessed is she that believed for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord" [Luke 1:41-45]. Thus Elizabeth, being filled with the Holy Spirit, calls Mary the Mother of the Lord, the God of Heaven; it is precisely the God of Heaven that she is here calling "Lord," as is clear from her further words: "She that believed…those things which were told her from the Lord" –the Lord God.

The Mother of God continues to pray to her Lord and Son for our protection and salvation. Saint Maximos the Confessor says, of the Christian goal of becoming Christ-like, of theosis. Just as the Theotokos gave birth to Christ in a bodily way, so we must,Saint Maximos tells us, give birth to Christ in an unbodily or spiritual way. In so doing, we imitate her practical spiritual life, including the purity and humility by which she formed her free will into PERFECT OBEDIENCE to the Will of God. My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ Our Only True Lord, God, and Savior,

On the 26th of October, Our Holy Orthodox Church Commemorates
the Great-Martyr and Wonder-worker DEMETRIOS the Myrrh-gusher.

Apolytikion (Dismissal) Hymn of the Holy Martyr. Third Tone

A GREAT champion hath the whole world found thee to be when in
grave perils; for thou dost put to flight the heathen, O victorious one.
As thou didst humble Lyaeus’s arrogance and gavest boldness to
Nestor in the stadium, thus, O holy Great Martyr Demetrios, do thou
entreat Christ God that we be granted great mercy.

Kontakion Hymn of the Holy Martyr. Second Tone

GOD, Who hath given thee invincible strength, O Demetrios, hath
adorned the Church with the royal purple of the streams of thy
blood and hath kept thy city unharmed, for thou art the support
thereof.

Saint Demetrios was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith of Christ. When Maximian first came to Thessalonike in 290 A.D., he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested and kept bound in a bath-house. While the games were underway in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain friend of his, a barbarian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength of his body, boasted in the stadium and challenged the citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him were defeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor, an acquaintance of Demetrios, came to the Saint in the bath-house and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the Sign of the Precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium and said, "O God of Demetrios, help me!" and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat an smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of the defeat, he commanded straightway and Demetrios was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bath-house. As for Nestor, Maximian, the pagan Roman emperor, commanded that he be slain with his own sword.

The great earthquake commemorated here took place in 740 A.D., during the reign of Leo the Isaurian, the first of the Iconoclast emperors. [The Great Horologion]

MORE ON THE LIFE OF THE GREAT MARTYR DEMETRIOS OF THESSALONIKI

Demetrios was baptized at an early age, and he grew from strength to strength in virtue. From his childhood years, by nature and disposition, he was good, innocent, sweet, and humble, and his character foretold the great stature in the Lord he would attain in due time. The people of the city honored the youth for his excellent lineage, but more so for his virtue, entegrity, and chastity. He was not only superior in the nobility of his soul, prudence, and justice, but also admired among the young menas certainly the most handsome. He busied himself chiefly with what was good, but he also exercised himself in the arts of war, since at that time young men greatly esteemed military careers. He loved righteousness and abhorred injustice. His good fame and virtues were in the mouths of all, including those in the circle of Emperor Maximian Galerius. In an interview, the emperor was impressed with the young man. Maximian Galerius selected Demetrios, out of all the leaders of Thessaloniki, and elevated him to the rank of doux, that is, military commander of all Thessaly. However, before the holy man was given this dignity or promotion, from the emperor, it was NOT known that he was a Christian. When he received the office, however, he made it no secret that he was a Christian.

Day and night, Demetrios never left off teaching the word of God and faith in the Christ. He was instructing the people openly, without any attempt at concealment or fear that the emperor should learn of his activities. He made it his chief labor to sow the seed of piety in a suitable manner that was adapted to those souls who listened. He was explaining to the idolaters how the True God fashioned man and honored him, and how he was placed in Paradise where he might rejoice and delight in Christ. The devil, OUT OF ENVY, deceived him so that he might transgress the command of God. Many of the converts had been Greek pagans.

Demetrios’ teachings were bringing forth abundant fruit. Thus, considering nothing else as gain, except converting the entire city of Thessaloniki to belief in the Christ, he never ceased preaching. The devil, the enemy of Truth, who always bears malice toward the souls of men, observed that the Christians were multiplying and the idolaters were diminishing in numbers. Steeped in envy, he employed various machinations to hinder the Saint’s preaching. After he failed to thwart the holy man, the devil sought the only way to achieve Demetrios’ permanent silence, and that was to have him put to death. What he contrived to perpetuate against the Saint, nonetheless, worked to the devil’s own ruin, as we shall soon see. Demetrios perceived in the Spirit that the time of his repose was drawing near, so he instructed his devout friend Loupos, to distribute all his inheritance and belongings, while he prepared himself with fasting and prayer.

Emperor Maximian had just brought under Roman rule the Scythians and Sarmatians. When he arrived in Thessaloniki, certain idolaters, having the devil in their heart and wishing to be honored by the emperor for their loyalty and love, went to him and declared that Demetrios, whom your Majesty honored with the rank of governor of Thessaly, has renounced the religion of his fathers and believes in the Christ, the One Who was crucified by the Hebrews. And even this does not satisfy him; but he also sits in his very court of justice, and openly preaches that this Christ is the True God! Indeed, many persons have been deceived and misled by his words, and have abandoned their ancient beliefs and become Christians.

Wishing to learn the truth for himself, he commanded that Demetrios be brought to him. The imperial officers, like fierce lions, immediately seized Demetrios and brought him before the emperor. The Saint, since he was willing and ready from the start to witness and suffer Martyrdom for the name of Christ, offered no resistance to those who apprehended him. The emperor spoke to Demetrios, saying, "I did not expect such a lack of regard on thy part… And yet thou didst not come forth even one mile from the city to meet me in advance?"

The Emperor became exceedingly angry and commanded that they incarcerate him. The soldiers took the holy man and led him to be imprisoned, not in the usual prison, but in an unclean place. The subterranean chamber of that bathhouse was used to pour out all kinds of useless and unclean materials, such as excrement. The holy Demetrios remained constant in prayer. When he lifted up his soul chanting hymns to God, it was as if he were in a bright chamber. Though the Saint certainly pleased God, he longed for the hour of his death.

The Martyrdom of Saint Demetrios

The soldiers heeded the command of the Emperor and went to the bathhouse. They marched in with their lances ready in their hands. They found the holy man standing at prayer. Without uttering a word, Saint Demetrios himself raised his right hand and received the first lance in his side, in the same place where our Savior Christ was lanced in the Cross. The other soldiers then pierced his body all over with their lances. Such was the martyrdom of the Great-Martyr Demetros, blessed Christians, whom we commemorate on the 26th of October. After the soldiers fulfilled their commission, they left Saint Demetrios on the ground where he lay. Certain godly Christians came to the bathhouse secretly, on account of the fear of the emperor. They found his holy relics on the ground. In that chamber where he struggled and suffered martyrdom the Christians interred him.

Saint Loupos

One of the burial party was a personal friend of the Saint, Loupos, who stood by the Saint until his repose. Loupos removed the ring that the Saint had on his right hand, then took up Saint Demetrios’ handkerchief and the mantle that was draped over his shoulders, and then dipped them into his blooded wounds. Now many miracles were wrought through these sanctified articles. All those suffering from diseases of every kind were healed, as well as those possessed by demons. It was not long before the emperor heard reports of these cures. Therefore, he dispatched his soldiers to apprehend Loupos and decapitated him.

After the repose of Saint Demetrios, it was God’s will to glorify him in all the world. He dispensed in His economy to have fragrant myrrh flow from his body. Although both natives and those afar came and collected the myrrh, this in no way exhausted the supply. In fact, the greater the demand, the more the supply increased through the intercessions of the Saint. This myrrh, filled with Divine Grace and power, ushered in great healings. People hence, from all over were coming with profound faith. [The Great Synaxaristes of the Orthodox Church]
